Trips & Tips

This blog deviates slightly from our planned purpose solely because a crew just returned from trekking in the Himalayas of which I was a part. Amazing! Yes, at my age, I trekked the trails with waterfalls, landslides, and donkey caravans! We trekked over a nine-day period and this month will feature some notes about the trip and tips for trekking!

Hang on – these boots are made for trekking! You need a really good pair of boots (mine are made by Keen) due to the roughness of the terrain. Up and down, rocks, water and swinging bridges mark the path. Your feet need to be covered for secure steps.

About the only thing that grows as high as we were, is potatoes, but we discovered experimental green houses, where cabbage, peppers, beans, and saag (spinach) grows. I wondered how our garden tool, The MaxBit, would work in the area since last month these villages received electricity. We even heard someone running a saw in the distance as we trekked in one of our highest places.

We rested along the way and ate delicious dal bhat (bean soup and rice) while enjoying amazing views. Wildflowers decorating the trail, cascading waterfalls in the distance, and great conversations along the way caused the time to fly.

Trekking poles, a good backpack, a water bottle and filter, tissue and sunglasses are more essentials needed for a great trek. The weather this time of year brought out the wildlife. We saw bears, deer, monkeys, and lots of bird varieties which always make the outdoors interesting.

And also for a trekking checklist:

Nepal is a beautiful country filled with friendly, innovative, hardworking people using the resources around them to better their world. Come and see.

Remember, the heart of the matter is the matter of the heart!
