Sunrise-Sunset and the Heat In Between

In many parts of the country, July is one of the hottest months. People find the heat invigorating and inviting – only if they are in a swimming pool or at the beach! Otherwise, mid-summer heat is exhausting, unwanted and downright dangerous. So far where I am we have experienced temps in the 100s with a heat index of 107. Stifling! Although heat is not a friend to most humans it is a friend to some plants, vegetation, and flowers. If you can brave the early morning temperatures to plant some of these July wonders, you will reap the benefits into the first frost.

Well, you did it. You planted in June/July and now it is really hot. How do you protect your plants that are developing a root system with hot dry days? I am so glad you asked. Several DIY tips help plants stay healthy during high temps. Here are 3.

1.      Water plants in the early morning.

2.      Mulch your plants.

3.      Don’t fertilize during heat waves.

More tips and details about these tips can be found in this article.

Meanwhile, if you spend time outside drink plenty of fluids, especially water. Stay away from drinks that can cause dehydration, like iced coffee and tea, while outside. I carry a full water bottle with me everywhere I go. Stay hydrated!

Until next month, remember; the heart of the matter is the matter of the heart.
